When all roads in Patna led to Ramdev camp

All roads led to Ramdev's first "Yoga Vigyan Shivir" at Gandhi Maidan here on Sunday at an unearthly hour of 4 am.

The city seemed to come alive with thousands of men, women and children hurrying to catch the first sight of the man who has taken the nation's imagination by storm.

After the initial hiccups, normal for a huge congregation as this, the camp began at 5 am. The 30,000-strong crowd gave the yoga guru a tumultuous welcome when he expressed joy at the large turnout.

"This is the largest shivir I have addressed so far in the country. And, Gandhi Maidan is the biggest maidan in India.

Bihar is the land of Lord Buddha, Patanjali and Mata Sita... All girls and women assembled here should emulate her to bring back the state's ancient glory. People here are generous, large-hearted and warm," he said.

And, then there was pin-drop silence as the guru began his series of pranayams first the quintessential chanting of the 'Aum' and then bhastrika, kapal bhati, bahya, anulom-vilom, bhramari and udgeeth.

Coming down heavily on multinational companies, he thundered, "You should ban the entry of cold drinks, burgers and pizzas, as they not only make you obese but also increase the stress level."

Smiling, he said, "Thanda matlab toilet-cleaner. Do you know long use of cold-drinks can cause infertility in women? The MNCs are out to ruin this ancient tradition and culture of ours."

He also did not leave those doctors untouched who, he said, tied up with pathological labs for "commission". "Doctors should treat patients, give them minimum medicine and not fool them."
